The California State Assembly Internship Program offers students a unique opportunity to participate in and experience the work of a State Assembly District Office.

Internship:

The most important roles of a District Office are to keep the local community connected with the legislative work in Sacramento and to connect constituencies with state programs and agencies. This is accomplished through community-based events, constituent casework, multi-disciplinary communications, and everyday involvement with the AD-21 community. As an intern, you will provide support to District Staff with special events, constituent services and inquiries, and other special projects related to the duties of the District Office.

Qualifications/Essential Duties:

The ideal candidate must be currently enrolled in school: undergraduate, community college, or high school accepted. The ideal candidate will have an interest in state and local policy, communications, public relations, and other related fields. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Critical thinking and creative problem solving
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines
  • Researching issues in response to community inquiries
Benefits:

Although unpaid, interns receive important and lasting benefits such as: extensive understanding of legislative processes, strengthened research skills, networking, professional development, and a deepened relationship with your community. Interns have the opportunity to earn a letter of recommendation and may also qualify for school/university credit.

Many legislators and district and policy staff began their careers in public service with an internship in a District office. It is an invaluable way of understanding California’s democratic legislative processes, as well as an excellent opportunity to build relationships while serving your community.

Interns will gain valuable education and work experience by fully participating in agreed-upon work hours. All internship work is voluntary and students will not receive any monetary compensation.

Please complete the below application and submit all the required materials. Qualified candidates will be invited for an interview.

Thank you for your interest in this opportunity to serve your AD-21 community.
