Port of Long Beach issues white paper on challenge of transitioning shipping lines to green fuels

“Outdated regulations cannot stand in the way of cleaner fuels that will support our carbon reduction goals,” said Assemblymember Diane Papan, D-San Mateo, the bill’s author. “Technology evolves quickly and we must adapt accordingly.”

Among the more challenging sectors in cutting port-related pollution has been the large container ships that transport cargo across the Pacific Ocean to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The vessels have long lifespans, are expensive to replace and don’t fall under some of the environmental regulations that less mobile port equipment does.
