San Mateo, CA – Assemblymember Diane Papan and San Mateo County Supervisor Lisa Gauthier are proud to announce the winners of their joint inaugural Student Art Contest, with the theme of “Art & Labor: Honoring Our History, Inspiring Our Future.”
This contest invited middle and high school students from San Mateo County to submit original, two-dimensional artworks reflecting the theme: “The Role, Presence, and History of Organized Labor in San Mateo County.”
The contest received a remarkable array of submissions, displaying the creativity and insight of young artists in the community. The winners and runners-up in each category are as follows:
High School Category:
- Winner: Aria Luna Parra Rasine, Sequoia High School
- First Runner-Up: Emily Chhen, Menlo Atherton High School
- Second Runner-Up: Esha Mittal, Design Tech High School
Middle School Category:
- Winner: Sofie Khandelwal, Sandpiper Elementary
- First Runner-Up: Melanie Cortes, Casa Circulo Cultural
- Second Runner-Up: Carter Fisher, Woodland School
Each winning artist will receive commendations from both Assemblymember Papan and Supervisor Gauthier, have their artwork displayed in their respective offices, and be featured on official social media channels and websites. Additionally, they will be invited to a private lunch with the Assemblymember and Supervisor to discuss their work and the significance of labor history in our community.
“The creativity and thoughtfulness demonstrated by these young artists are truly inspiring,” said Assemblymember Papan. “Their work not only honors the rich history of organized labor in our county but also highlights the importance of understanding and appreciating the contributions of workers throughout our community.”
There will be a formal ceremony for the winners on Tuesday, October 21st from 6pm-7pm at the Manzanita Hall. The event is open to the public. Visit our website for more information and to RSVP: Student Art Contest
The Student Art Contest was open to students ages 11-18 who reside or attend school in Supervisor Gauthier's district, which includes parts of Redwood City, Menlo Park, North Fair Oaks, and East Palo Alto which overlays with Assemblymember Papan’s Assembly District 21. The contest is focused on fostering a deeper understanding of labor history and inspire the next generation to appreciate and contribute to the ongoing legacy of organized labor in San Mateo County.
“This contest has been a wonderful opportunity to engage with our youth and celebrate the vital role of labor in shaping our communities,” said Supervisor Lisa Gauthier. “The students' artworks serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing impact of organized labor and the importance of continuing to support workers' rights and dignity.”
